Why did you decide to get married where you did?
We had our wedding in the front garden of Sarah’s grandparents beach house in Moggs Creek. Sarah spent many of her holidays growing up there and ever since we started dating it became one of our favourite spots to spend quality time together.
When we decided to get married and were brainstorming ideas where we could have our ceremony, we realised we wanted it to be somewhere special with meaning. The backyard area of the property we chose had a slight decline to some beautiful trees, forming a natural amphitheater – we trimmed a few branches and trees back and before we knew it we were planning an intimate wedding!
How many guests did you have?
We split our ceremony and reception up over two days. We often heard other couples say that their wedding was the best day of their lives, so we thought why not have two! Our ceremony had 38 guests and our reception the following night had 91.
What was your budget?
Not having to pay for a venue really helped with our budget, we skimped on a few things and did lots of DIY, But….. we also splurged on things that were important to us.
our budget was 25k but we probably spent just under 30k for absolutely everything wedding related (i had a spreadsheet lol) from engagement rings to rice paper confetti.
Tell us about your outfits.
Sarah’s dress was actually from Bec & Bridge – she went to a few wedding dress shops but never fell in love with anything, and didn’t think the dresses she did like were worth the price tag. We found her dress online, went and tried it on together at the emporium showroom and bought it for under $300!
To make her outfit that extra bit ‘bridal’ she bought a sheer blouse from de la Rosa. it was made to measure and handmade in Hawaii. Sarah wanted something that had an elegant look that still allowed her to be free and move around as we had a short walk after our ceremony planned to our favourite lookout spot, and then the next day turn the dress into ‘party mode’ just by removing the veil and sheer blouse – we were also anticipating hot February weather!
Sam got his tuxedo made to measure at Oscar Hunt in the city. He was quite particular on what he wanted, so hes hopped around a bit to find a like minded place that would guide him in the direction he needed. Although we were goin to be in a garden and on the beach, Sam still wanted to look quite formal.
What was the most important aspect for you, in terms of planning your wedding?
The most important thing was choosing our vendors and locking them in straight away. Also… if you’re reading this you are already on the right track, but getting Nick locked in to shoot our wedding both days was super important for us. We place a lot of value on the memories of photos and videos – so getting someone whose work we LOVED was really important to us. Not loving every single shot from the day just wasn’t going to be an option, that’s why we picked Nick!
Any tips for couples getting married?
Don’t listen to anyone else. Stay true to you, and do what you want to do!
Are there any vendors that you would like to tell us a little more about?
Nick recommended his friend Aaron from Revel Films to shoot our ceremony on super 8 – they were definitely a dynamic duo and so glad we decided to get a videographer as well! Shoutout to you Aaron!
I can’t recommend Oscar Hunt enough if you’re looking for a proper tuxedo/suit. the whole experience was worth every penny. – Sam
