Queenstown High Country destination wedding
Tell us a little about yourselves!
Eight years ago, a simple swipe set the beginning of Kader and Kathleen’s story. What followed was a stretch of late-night conversations, shared curiosity, and a slow-growing connection built on patience and understanding. Their relationship started in Perth, but it deepened quickly-enough that, when Kader returned to France ten months later, the distance felt heavier than expected.
Before that separation, the couple travelled to the Philippines. For two weeks, there were island adventures, laughter, family introductions, and the kind of memories that make goodbyes sting. Despite time zones and miles, their relationship strengthened. We handled long-distance life with devotion, resilience, and a lot of humour during the harder moments.
When Kader finally returned to Perth, life together began to take shape. They moved into their first apartment, built a warm and joyful home, and eventually created a house of their own. A new milestone unfolded during a trip to France: Kathleen met Kader’s family, and Kader surprised her with a heartfelt proposal at the romantic Château de La Gaude. Three days later, they held an intimate ceremony, exchanging vows that reflected their shared values and deep respect for one another.
Two years on, they chose to celebrate their union again-this time in breathtaking Queenstown, surrounded by the people who had walked alongside them throughout their journey.
Why did you decide to get married where you did?
Queenstown was chosen because it reflects everything they wanted their wedding to embody. Natural. Simple. Timeless. After years of building a life together – sharing routines, creating a home, navigating distance – marriage felt less like a formality and more like a joyful continuation of what they had already chosen daily.
The landscape of Queenstown offered a backdrop that felt both grounding and magical. It became the perfect setting for a celebration that wasn’t just for them, but for every guest who travelled to witness their story.
How many guests did you have?
The celebration was kept intentionally intimate, with just under 40 guests, including children. The smaller group allowed the day to feel personal, warm, and exactly as they imagined.
What Was Your Wedding Budget?
The original goal was to stay under $50,000, although the whirlwind of planning meant the final figure drifted beyond that. With everything happening at once, keeping track became less important than creating a meaningful day.
Tell us about your outfits.
The Groom
Kader wore a classic three-piece black suit from MJ Bale, paired with a matching bow tie and cufflinks. They chose two sets of footwear: sleek Aquila shoes for the ceremony and formal leather boots for the mountaintop photoshoot. A fresh haircut from Bad Luck Barbershop in Queenstown completed the look.
The Bride
Kathleen found her wedding dress and veil at Hobnob in Perth. Wanting something personal, she ordered additional fabric to create a custom detachable shawl, crafted by a Perth seamstress. Her ceremony shoes were elegant Halo heels from Georgie’s Bridal Shoes, later swapped for cream Steve Madden boots during the mountain shoot.
For the reception, she changed into a custom-made dress created by a designer from the Philippines – bringing her vision to life with craftsmanship that felt both meaningful and magical.
What was the most important aspect for you, in terms of planning your wedding?
Support.
Having her partner by her side through every stage – big or small – was the foundation that kept everything steady.
Were There Any Cultural or Traditional Elements You Wanted to Include?
Yes. Kathleen grew up in the Philippines and wanted her heritage to shine through, so she included traditional symbols in the ceremony – the coins, candles, veil, and cord. Each piece carried significance, marking unity, guidance, prosperity, and the joining of two lives.
Any tips for couples getting married?
Follow your heart with every choice. Remind each other that the day belongs to the two of you, and everything else is secondary.
